All about Radon

Radon is a radioactive gas that cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. It is the product of natural decay of radioactive uranium in the rocks and soil around us. It can be found almost everywhere on earth and therefore Radon gas is found almost everywhere. Radon gas is a source of more radiation than all other natural causes - cosmic rays, internal sources and man-made radiation-X rays, nuclear medicine and consumer products put together.

Radon gas that comes out into open air dissipates very quickly and is no threat. Radon gas that comes into a home can accumulate to dangerous levels. Long-term exposure to high levels of radon poses a very real health threat.

Important Facts on Radon:

  • Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer
  • Nearly one in 15 homes in the U.S. has a high level of indoor Radon
  • The U.S. Surgeon General and EPA recommend all homes be tested for Radon
  • Homes with high Radon levels can be fixed

Radon in water
Radon being soluble in water enters the underground water supply easily. All ground water has radon and some have very high concentrations. Radon that enters a home through the water supply escapes from the water when flushed, heated or sprayed in showers, dishwashers and clothes washers.

In homes with a private well, radon entering from the water can raise the radon in air to very high levels and breathing this air for long periods can increase the risk of lung cancer.

Radon concentrations commonly are much higher in water than in air. As a general rule, a measurement of 10,000 pCi/L radon in well water will contribute to 1 pCi/L throughout the household Air.
